Relationship: Aunt and niece

Sarah Starkey (1809 – 26 February  1902)

Sarah was born in Haddenham and was the daughter of Thomas and Sarah. She was baptised in Haddenham on 26 August 1810 and in 1851/1861 was living in London working as a housemaid for Thomas Turton, Bishop of Ely.  She retired and went to live with her sister Rebecca in Sutton, near Ely (1881). After Rebecca died in 1883, she lived at 24 Kingston Street with her sister Mary Taverner (1891) and then with niece Florence Kirkup and her family at the same address. Sarah died at Kingston Street aged 93 years old.

Caroline Lydia Walton (née Taverner) (1849 – 6 January 1926)

Caroline was born in Cambridge and was the daughter of John and Mary Ann (née Starkey) (1812-1892) Taverner. Aged 13, she was living in Sutton with her maternal aunts Rebecca and Lydia and married Robert Walton (1846-) in Cambridge in 1867. Robert worked in a marine store (a marine store dealer was a licensed broker who bought and sold used cordage, bunting, rags, timber, metal and other general waste materials) and they had two daughters: Florence Sarah Taverner (1867-1944) and Harriet Elizabeth (1869-1952). The family lived at   Staffordshire Street (at least 1871 -1881) and in 1881 Caroline was working as a dressmaker. The marriage appears to have broken down and by 1891 she was living at 26 Union Terrace, working as housekeeper to florist Alfred French. In 1901/1911 she was working for Alfred at 215 Mill Road. Alfred died in 1914 and Caroline then lived with her daughter Elizabeth and son in law Elias Longstaff at 217 Mill Road. She died at home after a short illness and her funeral was held on 11 January at St. Barnabas’ Church. Local newspapers reported that she was ‘an active worker for many years in the Women’s Secion of the Conservative Club and was also a member of the St. Barnabas’ Mothers’ Meeting’. Many of the members of the Mothers’ Meeting attended the funeral service.
