Relationship – mother and daughter

Rose Rebbecca Stretch (23 June 1885 – 10 December 1939)

Rose was born in Norwich, but was raised in Cambridge, by her parents Frederick and Emma. The family lived at Cockburn Street, and Rose worked as a nursemaid (1901). In 1911 she was living in Bedford and working as a parlourmaid for Caroline Airy and her four step daughters. Rose later returned to Cambridge to live with her mother and nephew Fred at Cockburn Street. She died at home  and her funeral was held at St. Philip’s Church on 15 December.

Emma Stretch (née Brown) (12 September 1859 – 20 January 1941)

Emma was born in Balsham and baptised there on 13 November 1859. She was the daughter of Samuel and Rebecca (née Stanford) and grew up  on the High Street in Balsham, where her father worked as an agricultural labourer. Aged 11 she was working as a ‘nurse girl’ and later worked as a domestic servant. She married Frederick Stretch (1860-1924) in Balsham in 1882 and they had four children: Bessie Alice (1882-1962), Mabel Emma (1884-1952), Rose Rebecca (1885-1939) and Frederick James (1889-1964). Frederick  was a stonemason and they lived at Cockburn Street. After she was widowed she continued to live at Cockburn Street and died at home aged 81 years (although her grave monument was transcribed as 83 years).
