Susanna Woodley (1859 – May 1920)

Susanna was born in Saffron Walden, and baptised ther eon 10 July 1859. She was the daughter of agricultural labourer John and Sarah (née Archer) Woodley. She grew up on the High Street in Saffron Walden and had two children out of wedlock: Arthur Drane (1876-1884) and Alice (1879-1924). In 1881 she was living with her widowed father, brother John and her two children at the family home and was working as a tailor’s machinist.  In 1891/1901 she was documented as a tailoress, and was living at the family home with her daughter.

Alice married in 1908 and Susanna then moved to live with her at 27 Mawson Road, Cambridge. She died at Mawson Road aged 61 years old and was buried at Mill Road Cemetery on 3 June 1920.

 

Alice Skipp (née Woodley) (c.November 1879 – 13 July 1924)

Alice grew up in Saffron Walden and married tailor Alfred William Skipp (1876-1969) at Saffron Walden High Street Baptist Church on 8 June 1908. They had two sons: Alfred Lionel (1909-1982) and Reginald Victor (1910-1994) and had moved to Mawson Road by 1910. Alfred worked for tailors Smart and Sons, 11 Market Street. Alice died at home aged 45 years old ‘after illness patiently borne’. Her funeral was held on 16 July and she was buried in the same graveset as her mother.

Alfred married widow Amy Louise Lawrence (née Fry) (1879-1959) on 25 July  1925 at St. Barnabas Church.  The couple continued to live at 27 Mawson Road (until at least 1939).
