By 1939 he had retired, and both he and Mary were still living at 61 East Road. He died at home following a fall, aged 84 years old and was buried in the Holy Trinity area of Mill Road Cemetery on 22 November.  Mary was unable to attend the funeral.

The little girl was taken to Addenbrooke’s Hospital in a motor but ‘the doctor who examined her when she arrived said she was ‘too far gone”.  An inquest was held and a post mortem examination found that he had died of a ‘hemorrhage of the brain – a most unusual thing in a child of her age’.
