‘Till the day break’

Elijah Thurlbourn (1863 – 16 December 1920)

Elijah was born in Girton, the son of John and Sarah Thurlbourn and grew up in the village where his father was an agricultural labourer. Aged 18 he was living at Trinity Hall Porter’s Lodge with the Thurlow family and was documented as being a college servant. He married Mary Reynolds (1866-1960) in 1889 and they had five children: Clara Minnie (1889-1966), Gladys Margaret (1895-1950), Albert Edward Charles (1900-1901), Esther Elizabeth (1902-1972) and Evelyn Mary (1908-1931). Elijah continued to work as a college servant and the family lived at 3 Abbey Walk (1891), 35 Orchard Street, (1897), 15 Church Street (1901-at least 1904), Pretoria Road (1908) and 19 Emery Street (1909 onwards). He died ‘peacefully’ at home aged 57 years.

Elijah and Mary’s infant son was also buried in the St. Andrew the Less area of Mill Road Cemetery and may have been buried in the same grave as his father.

Albert Edward Charles Thurlbourn (c. December 1900 – September 1901)

Albert died at 15 Church Street aged 9 months old and was buried at Mill Road Cemetery on 9 September 1901.
