In Loving Memory of
CHARLES WEYER died January 25 1890 aged 57
Also of BETSEY widow of the above
who died February 22 1906 aged 70 years
Charles Weyer (1 November 1832 – 25 January 1890)

Charles was born in Norwich and was one of eight children (6 sons, 2 daughters) of William Weyer (sometimes spelt Wire) (1803-1858) and Mary Ann (née Thurston) (1803-1864). William was variously described as a weave (1832/1841) when they were living at Rose Yard, Norwich and then as a silk weaver/beer seller (1851) and was licensee of the Flower Pot Inn, St. Martin’s Street, Norwich between 1851 and 1858. In 1851 Charles was living with his maternal uncle and aunt – William and Susan (née Pogson) Thurston at King Street, Cambridge. William Thurston was a confectioner and Charles was an apprentice to him.
He married Betsey Horspool in 1858 and they had at least six children: Charles William (1859-1914), Emily (1861-1936), Lucretia Matilda (1863-1916), Florence (1865-1923), Kate Beatrice (1868-1874) and Bessie Isabel (1874-1946). Charles was variously described as a confectioner/sugar boiler and the family lived at 1 Malcolm Place (1861), 1 Grafton Street (1871) and 3 Upper Gwydir Street (at least 1877 onwards). He died at 3 Upper Gwydir Street aged 57 years old.
Betsey Weyer (née Horspool) (1835 – 22 February 1906)

Betsey was born in Walsoken, near Wisbech on the Cambridge/Norfolk border and was one of four children of shoemaker Richard Horspool (1806-1859) and Sarah (née Pogson). Sarah’s sister Susan Pogson, was Charles Wyer’s aunt, which is perhaps how she met her future husband. After she was widowed Betsey moved to live with her cousin Sarah Ann Thurston in Union Road (1891) together with two of her children. By 1901 she had moved to live at 34 Thompsons’ Lane with children Charles (a wine and spirit merchant), Florence (a tabacconist) and Bessie (a teacher). Betsey died at 6 Mackenzie Road.
Betsey’s brother William is also buried at Mill Road Cemetery.
Charles and Betsey’s daughter Emily married Charles Ernest Brown, the son of Benjamin and Rebecca Brown. Their youngest daughter Bessie married Charles’ brother Edward Wallis Brown.
