Henry Wheeler (1846 – 16 November 1903)
Henry was the son of John and Rebecca and was born in Steeple Morden. He grew up at Gatley End Farm in the village, where his father was the farm bailiff and aged 15 was working as an agricultural labourer. He later worked as a carpenter/builder and married Elizabeth Kitchiner on 27 August 1868 at St Mary’s Church, Hornsey Rise, London. They had moved to Cambridge by at least 1871 and had at least three children: Florence Elizabeth Kitchiner (1869-1938), Rose (1872-1931) and John Wesley (1874-). The family lived at Madingley Road (1871), 73 Kingston Street (1881) and Bledlow House, Cavendish Road (1891). He worked in partnership with James Alderton and the business operated from Hills Road under the name of Alderton & Wheeler. The partnership was dissolved in February 1889 and James Alderton continued to run the buisness under the name of Alderton and Co.
Henry and Elizabeth’s youngest daughter Rose was known as ‘Sister Rose’ and was a ‘sister’ at the Church Street Mission Home for six years before marrying William Downs in September 1899. William had worked for the Cambridge Independent Press and the wedding at Christ Church attracted ‘considerable interest’. She was said to have won universal esteem for her good and loyal work and it was reported that she would be greatly missed by the poorer districts within Cambridge. The married couple left on the 4.43pm train to London to take up new roles as superintendant and matron of the Dr. Barnardo’s Receiving Home, Stepney.
After Henry was widowed in 1892, he married for a second time in 1898 to widow Ruth Webb (1862-1945). They lived at 39 Cavendish Road and had one son together: Albert Henry Wheeler (1899-1970). Henry died at home aged 57 years old.
His widow Ruth married for a third time in 1906 to Henry Bailey (1843-). She died in Cambridge aged 88 years old.
