Philip Williams (17 November 1845 – 18 June 1909)
Philip was born in Swavesey, a village nine miles north west of Cambridge and was one of thirteen children born to Edward and Lucy Williams. His father farmed six acres in the village and aged 15 Philip was working as a groom to the local doctor. He later trained as a carpenter and by 1871 was lodging with the Hills family at 129 Fitzroy Street. He married Mary Wright at St. Paul’s Church, Thornton Heath, Surrey on 21 February 1880. The couple lived at 5 Albert Street (1881),7 City Road (1891) and then Eden Street. After Mary’s death in 1901, Philip married Caroline Julia Barber (1854-1939) in 1902 and the couple continued to live at 62 Eden Street. He died at home aged 63, and probate records described him as a builder, rather than a carpenter. His funeral was held on 22 June.
Mary Williams (née Wright) (c.1835 – 22 March 1901)
Mary was born in Linton, and was the daughter of James and Rebecca. In 1871 she was living at 31 Regent Street, and was a general servant to college butler William Edwards and his wife Caroline. Mary died at Eden Street and was buried on 26 March.
