Mabel Mary Woolston (née Clarke) (1894 – 11 May 1924)
Mable was the daughter of Harry and Priscilla Clarke and grew up at 12 Edward Street. Her father was a general labourer and aged 16 Mabel was living at 25 Mackenzie Road, where she was a general servant for Walter and Louise Mitchell. She married plumber Sidney Louis Woolston (1885-1858) in 1916 and they had three children: Sylvia May (1917-2001), Peter, and John Sidney (1924-1997). They lived with her parents at Edward Street until at least 1919, and then moved to their own house at 26 Grafton Street. Sidney served as a Sapper with the Royal Engineers in the 1st World War.
Mabel died five weeks after giving birth to twins Peter and John. Newspapers reported she died after a ‘very trying illness at home’ and was moved to Addenbrooke’s Hospital for a blood infusion, ‘but in spite of this, and with all the care of the medical profession, Mrs Woolston passed away’. She was 29 years old and her funeral was held on 15 May, where ‘a large number of friends gathered at the chapel and graveside to pay a last tribute of respect.’ It was also reported that ‘the hearse and coffin were covered with choice floral tributes’.
Peter Woolston (4 April 1924 – c.18 April 1924)
Peter was a twin and died aged 14 days old. He was buried on 22 April.
Sidney Woolston married Edith Jane Green (1876-1955) in 1925. They continued to live at 26 Grafton Street, and Sidney died at home on Boxing Day 1958.
