In Loving Memory of JOHN NICHOLLS SANDERS who died July 4. 1900. Aged 57 Years
“Sleep on beloved. Sleep and take thy rest.
Lay down thy head upon thy sa…….. breast.
We loved thee well but Jesus loved thee best.
Also of ELIZABETH MAYLE SANDERS who died Feb. 1907. Aged 65 years
John Nicholls Sanders (1842 – 4 July 1900)
John was baptised in Cambridge on 30 October 1842 and was the son of Zachariah Nicholls Sanders (1820-1891) and Ann (née Coe) (1820-1892). Zachariah was a baker and the family lived at Rowley’s Yard, Magdalen Street (1851) before moving to Waterbeach (1861). John also worked as a baker and in 1871 was lodging in Hackney, London. He married Harriet Nash on 26 October 1874 at St. Mary’s Church, Islington, but was widowed and living back in Cambridge by 1881. He married Elizabeth Otley in Ely in Spring 1881 and the couple lived at 64 Ainsworth Street. He died at home and his funeral was held on 6 July.
Elizabeth Mayle Sanders (née Otley) (1841 – 6 February 1907)
Elizabeth was born in Ely, the daughter of Matthias (1809-1883) and Elizabeth (née Mayle) (1813-1880). Her father was a journeyman miller, and the family lived on the Cambridge Road in Ely. Aged 29 Elizabeth was living at home and working as a dressmaker. After she was widowed, she continued to live at Ainsworth Street with a lodger and died at home aged 65 years old.
