Charles William Martindale (1793 – 22 March 1871)
Charles was the eldest child of Charles and Elizabeth Martindale. His father owned the Sawston Paper Mill. Charles married Ann Hurrell in Foxton on 12th February 1829. They had three children Charles William (1832-), Elizabeth Mary (1835-1907) and Henry Frank (1839-1914). Ann Martindale died probably sometime around 1840-1842. William continued to live in Sawston, with a housekeeper, before moving to Grantchester (1851) and then 60 Barton Road (1861) and finally 19 Regent Street (c.1865 onwards). In census documentation he is described as a landowner and gentleman, but died in March 1871 leaving effects of under £100.
William’s eldest son Charles William was left penniless after his fathers death. He had married Matilda Kewick in 1862 and they had lived in Harston. However William’s death ‘leaving no property’ meant that Charles had ‘no means’ and he had to suggest to his wife that they ‘should separate until he had succeeded in obtaining employment’. They separated for five years, but after Matilda inherited ‘a large fortune from her mother’ n 1876 he proposed that they should rekindle the marriage. When Matilda refused he ‘instituted an action to restitution of conjugal rights in the Divorce Courts’ (1879). Charles claimed that an error by the clerk of court meant he was unaware of the hearing, and was therefore not present. Matilda was granted a separation on the grounds of cruelty and was awarded custody of the children. He went to court in 1884 to ask for access to the children and custody of two of them. Matilda’s QC argued that Charles had no home in which to accomodate the children. The court decided that he could have ‘reasonable’ access at the home of their mother, subject to Charles giving 24 hours notice of intending to visit.
Louisa Adams (née Martindale) (1800 – 2 January 1882)
Louisa was the second child of Charles and Elizabeth Martindale. She was born in Sawston and married Rev. Richard Newton Adams (1793-1867) in Linton on 20 August 1840. Richard was the Rector of Rempstone, Nottinghamshire and the two appear to have lived entirely separate lives, with Richard living in Rempstone with a housekeeper and several servants, and Louisa remaining in Cambridgeshire.
In the census of 1841 she was living with her mother and brother William in Mill Lane Sawston. She continued to live with William after their mothers death in Sawston. She and William then moved to 4 Downing Terrace [1871 onwards] where her occupation was described as a widow and drawing money from bank property. She died at Downing Terrace in 1882 aged 81 years, leaving effects of £81, 9s and 9d.
William Martindale (1813 – 19 June 1890)
William was the youngest child of Charles and Elizabeth Martindale and was born in Sawston. In 1841 he was living at Mill Lane, Sawston and working as a farmer. Thereafter he is described as an annuitant and ‘house, land and bank property’. He lived with his sister Louisa and continued to live at 4 Downing Terrace after her death. In 1887 he gave £100 to Addenbrookes Hospital in recognition of Queen Victoria’s Golden Jubilee. He died at Downing Terrace in June 1890 leaving effects valued at £13,317 4s 3d (£1.2m at 2018 values).
4 Downing Terrace was sold at auction in August 1890 and was described as ‘containing on the first floor 3 bedrooms and closet, on the ground floor 2 sitting rooms and w.c. and in the basement kitchen, scullery and pantry. There is also a good garden in front and at back with brick and slated stable with loft over w.c. and dustbin, and back entrance from Terrace Lane. Gas and water are laid on’.
