Monument

This headstone stands about 14 rows east of the central path and a few plots south of the north path in the parish of Andrew the Less. The carved inscription is still legible but has suffered some erosion. It is next to a another family monument. AL344

In Affectionate Remembrance of MARY FRANCIS Who died March 8 1872 aged 38 years

Also In Loving Memory of FRANCES ANNIE ASHLEY Who entered into rest February 28th 1924 aged 46 years

Mary Francis (1838 – 8 March 1872)

Mary died at East Road, and her age was recorded as being 36 years old. Her grave monument gives her age as 38 years.

Frances Annie Ashley (1877 – 28 February 1924)

Frances was the daughter of George Ashley (1836-1915) and Martha (née Freeman) (1839-1882). George was a blacksmith and she was born in Sheffield. Her mother died when she was 4 years old and George married again in 1887 to widow Mary Jackson (1839-1921).  Aged 13 Frances was living with her family at 34 Albert Road, Morecambe (1891). In 1901 the family were still in Morecambe and  Frances was working as a draper’s assistant.  She moved to Cambridge to be a companion to her aunt Elizabeth Francis (née Ashley) at 146 Gwydir Street (1911). She died at home aged 46 years old.
