In Loving Memory of MARY SOPHIA KENT died August 30. 1927.
“Out of the deep have I called unto Thee O Lord
O let thine ears consider well the voice of my complaint.
If thou, LORD, wilt be extreme to mark what is done amiss,
O Lord, who may abide it? But .. mercy with Thee.”
(Although this verse is difficult to read it appears to be Psalm 130)

Mary Sophia Kent (née Backler) (1859 – 30 August 1927)
Mary was the daughter of George, a gardener and Elizabeth (née Last) Backler. George and Elizabeth brought up their family in Bradmore Street, Cambridge (1871/1881) and then 2 James Street (1891). They had at least seven children: George (1847-1873),S ophia (1849-1873), Elizabeth (1853-1908), Ellen Louisa (1856-1916), Mary Sophia, Clara Jane and Emily Catherine (1866-1937) . Emily’s parents and elder brother George are buried in the parish of St Andrew the Less with no known monument.
Mary married Charles Yorke Bright (1859 -1889) on 27 December 1880 at Christ Church, Cambridge. Charles was a solicitor’s clerk and they went to live in Brixton and had two children: Charles (1885-) and May Ethel (1888-1962). Charles died in London aged 30 years old and Mary then returned to live with her parents and sisters at 2 James Street (1891). She worked as a college bedmaker at Emmanuel College and in 1901 was living at 4 Newmarket Road with children and sisters Emily and Clara.
She married for a second time in 1906 to widower John Jasper Still Kent (1846-1934). John was an army pensioner who was working as a college servant when they married. In 1911 the couple were living at 3 Warkworth Street and he was documented as being a caretaker. She died in Cambridge aged 67 years old.
Clara Jane Backler (1862 – 10 September 1930)
Clara was Mary’s younger sister and in 1901 was living at 4 Newmarket Road and was documented as being a housekeeper. She then went to live with her sister Emily and niece May at 48 Abbey Road (1911 onwards). She died aged 68 years old.
