Monument
This headstone stands two rows to the east of the east path in the parish of Andrew the Less, just on the bend where the north path turned south and opposite the ‘Blackbird’ bird stone. It is in an area that is often covered in bramble. The carved inscription is still legible but quite faint.

In Affectionate Memory Of MARY ANN BARRON
Born July 16 1852 Died Nov 13 1892
‘Faithful unto death’
Mary Ann Barron (1852-1892)
The birth of a Mary Ann Barron was registered in Newmarket in 1852 her parents were Henry and Maria Barron who had moved to Cambridge by 1854. Henry was an engine smith. He and Maria were originally from Hertfordshire.
In 1861 the family were living “near the Railway station at 1 Mr Sayle’s houses”.
In 1871 Mary was working as a nursemaid for the Vinter family at 1 Dorset Terrace Hills Road.
By 1881 she was working for the Starkey family in London. Stock broker William Starkey was originally from Cambridge where, in 1851, his father was running the railway refreshment rooms. Mary worked for the family for over 20 years. They put an announcement of her death in The Morning Post on November 19th 1892
“BARRON – On the 13th inst., Mary Ann Barron (Nancy) for over twenty years the faithful servant and sincere friend of Mr and Mrs W. J. Starkey of 72 Boundary Road, South Hamstead.”
Presumably they were also responsible for the erection of the headstone.
Mary died at the Royal Northern Hospital, Holloway Road in Islington and was buried at Mill Road Cemetery on 18 November 1892.
Her sister in law Alice Barron is also buried in this cemetery but her brother James moved to live in Gransden to be near the eldest sister Emily.
