Rebecca Buttress (née Hinson) (1825 – 30 November 1885)

Rebecca was born in Elsworth, nine miles north west of Cambridge and baptised there on 29 May 1825. She was the daughter of John and Susannah (née Arber) and in 1841 was living with her widowed mother at 47 Gold Street. She married tailor George Short (1823-) in 1848 and they had two sons: John (1850-1929) and Charles (1852-1887). It isn’t known when George died, but by 1861 she was a widow living at 107 Fitzroy Street with her sons, sister Susannah and was a confectioner/sweet shop owner. She married for a second time on Boxing Day 1872 at Christ Church to Daniel Buttress (1834-1890). Daniel was a painter, and they continued to live at the confectionery shop in Fitzroy Street where Rebecca died aged 60 years old.

Her daughter in law Matilda (wife of Charles), granddaughter Ethel Minnie, and great granddaughter Beatrice are also buried at Mill Road Cemetery.

Another great granddaughter Gillian Audrey Frances Short is also buried in the Cemetery.

John Short (c. August 1850 –  4 March 1929)

John grew up with his widowed mother at Fitzroy Street and by the age of 20 was working as a journeyman tailor. He married Frances Mary Hinson (1849-1919) in on 1 October 1872 at Christ Church and they had two children: Arthur Pendred (1875-1946) and Mabel Frances (1882-1968). The family lived at 26 Malcolm Street, and John worked as a tailor, whilst Frances ran a Lodging House (1881/1891). They later moved to Glynn House, 23 Garden Walk (at least 1901 onwards). Frances Short died at home in January 1919 and is buried elsewhere at Mill Road Cemetery. John died  at Garden Walk aged 78 and was buried with his mother on 7 March.
