Relationship: Mother, father, two daughters and son in law

William Pendred Hinson (1827 – 6 October 1870)

William was born in Elsworth, a village nine miles north west of Cambridge and was baptised there on 8 June 1828. He was the son of John and Susanna (née Arber) Hinson and aged 13 was living with his widowed mother at 47 Gold Street, Cambridge. Susanna was a tailoress and William also trained and worked as a tailor. He married Susan Parmenter in 1845 and they had at least six children: Edwin Pendred James (1846-1911), Emily Amelia (1848-1938), Frances Mary (11849-1919), Richard Penn (1854-1918), Harriet Ellen (1858-1912) and Julia Anne (1861-1939). The family lived at 96 Fitzroy Street, where William also ran a tailoring business, before moving to 8 City Road (1861). In 1851 he was employing four men, and died at City Road aged 43 years old.

Susan Jane Hinson  (née Parmenter) (1820 – 2 July 1895)

Susan was born in Stambourne, near Steeple Bumpstead and was the daughter of Edward and Betsy Hinson. Edward was a printer, and by 1841 the family were living at 35 East Road, Cambridge.  After she was widowed Susan continue to live at 8 City Road until at least 1893 and worked as a tailoress/milliner.  She died at 57 Mawson Road aged 75 years.

Frances Mary Short (1849 – 26 January 1919)

Frances was the second daughter of William and Susan Hinson. In 1871 she was living at City Road and working as a milliner.  She married her cousin John Short (1850-1829) on 1 October 1872 at Christ Church and they had two children: Arthur Pendred (1875-1946) and Mabel Frances (1882-1968). The family lived at 26 Malcolm Street, and John worked as a tailor, whilst Frances ran a Lodging House (1881/1891). They later moved to Glynn House, 23 Garden Walk (at least 1901 onwards). She died at Glynn House aged 69 years old.

Julia Anne Cawston (née Hinson) (15 January 1861 – 27 October 1939)

Julia was the youngest child of William and Susan Hinson. She married Edgar Cawston in 1891 and they had one daughter: Gladys Maud (1892-1978). Immediately after the wedding they lived with Julia’s mother at 8 City Road, before moving to James Street (1901) and 25 Lyndewode Road (at leats 1911 onwards). Edward was a draper, and then worked as a draper’s buyer.  Their daughter Gladys was a talented musician and in July 1903 she took part in a concert at  St. Columba’s Hall. The Cambridge Daily News reported ‘the name of Miss Gladys Cawston upon the programme attached to the announcement of a Haydn Sonata seemed to indicate an adult peformer. Great surprise, therefore, was felt by a number of those present wehn, contrary to their expectations, Miss Cawston proved to be a juvenile of about eleven summers. Her pianoforte playing of compositions by Haydn, Bach, and Grieg was exceedingly clever’. In 1911 Julia was working as a music teacher.

Julia died at 25 Lyndewode Road aged 78 years old and her funeral  was held on 31 October at the Unitarian Memorial Church. She was a supporter of the Labour Party and at a Party meeting after her death ‘Mr Few referred to the passing of  Mrs. Cawston who had worked a great many years for the Labour Party. He recalled her activities in their early days, stating that she had placed her home at the disposal of the party and had taken a great interest in the social work, particularly among the young people. They all regretted her passing. The Council stood for a moment in silence’.

Edward Claxton Cawston (4 September 1863 – 29 August 1950)

Edward was born in King’s Lynn and was the son of George and Ann Mary Cawston.  He was baptised at St. Margaret’s Church on 24 February 1867 and grew up on the High Street in King’s Lynn where his father was a jeweller. Aged 17 Edward was working as an apprentice watchmaker, but was later a draper. Edward continued to live at Lyndewode Road after he was widowed and died in Taverham, Norfolk aged 86.
