John Charles Camps (5 April 1876 – 22 January 1949)
John was the son of John and Ann, and grew up at 17 Adam and Eve Street. His father was a cellarman and John worked as a cycle repairer (1901), later as a gas meter inspector (at least 1911 onwards). He married Kate Merry (1869-1908) in 1898 and the couple lived at 88 Norfolk Street. He was widowed in 1908 and then lived with his cousin Julia Moss, who acted as his housekeeper (1911) at Norfolk Street. The couple married in 1912 and had three children: Alec John Charles (1913-1913), Leonard John (1914-2012) and Doris Julia (1921-2006). By 1939 John had retired due to ill-health and died at home. It is thought he was 72 years old, according to documentation throughout his life, but the grave monument reads 73 years.
Julia Elizabeth Camps (née Moss) (20 April 1886 – 2 August 1970)
Julia was born in Lawshall, a village to the south of Bury St. Edmunds and was the daughter of Abraham (1845-1885) and Jane (née Haylock). Her father was a bricklayer’s labourer who is thought to have died before Jane was born. Her mother later married farmer Henry Ellison, and Julia grew up Paradise Farm, Lawshall, before moving to Cambridge to live at 88 Norfolk Street. She continue to live at 88 Norfolk Street until at least 1959 and died at Shenstone House, East Road aged 84.
From Parish burial records it is known John’s first wife was also buried in the St. Andrew the Less area of Mill Road Cemetery and is thought to have been buried in the same grave
Kate Camps (née Merry) (1869 – November 1908)
Kate was born in Long Stanton and baptised there on 18 April 1869. She was the second daughter of Andrew and Sarah Merry and grew up on the High Street in Longstanton, where her father was a farm bailiff (1871). He later worked as a parcel porter on the railway and by 1881 the family had moved to live at Cambridge Place. In 1891 Kate was living with her sister Rosa at 116 York Street, and both women were working as laundry maids. She died at home aged 39 years old and her funeral was held on 5 November 1908.
