Ann Cardinal (née Stapleton) (1824* – 25 March 1892)

Ann was born in East Rudham, Norfolk and baptised there on 13 June 1824. She was the daughter of labourer John  Stapleton and Mary Ann (née Newell) and aged 18 was working as a servant at Granstein Farm, Mileham for William and Ellen  Beck. She later moved to Cambridge and in 1851 was a house servant at Trumpington Street for currier Charles Balls. She married Thomas Cardinal on 13 July 1860 at St. Mary’s Church, Cambridge and they had three children: Thomas John (1861-1937), William Henry (1863-1933) and Ann Dorothy (1864-1945). Thomas Cardinal was a also a currier and they lived at 19 Adam and Eve Row (1861), 30 South Street (1871), Bradmore Street (1881/1891).  In 1871 and 1881 Ann was working as a college bedmaker and she died in 1892.

* Ann is thought to have been aged 67 years old when she died rather than 74 years as per the grave monument. Her age on the 1891 census was recorded as 66 years, and this is consistent with all other documentation through her life.

Thomas Cardinal (1828 – 18 September 1912)

Thomas was born in Halstead and baptised at St. Andrew’s Church, Halstead on 8 April 1828. His father was a currier and he might have moved to Cambridge to work for Charles Balls. After he was widowed he lived at Bradmore Street with his daughter Ann and son-in-law Robert Moden. He died aged 85 years – like his wife the age on the grave monument is inconsistent with documentation through his life time. In April 1911 he was recorded as being 83 years old.
