Thomas Gates (1800 – 23 December 1855)

Thomas was born in Fen Ditton and married Martha Underwood on 10 November 1834 in Barnwell. They had at least nine children: George (1835-1883), Susan (1835-1921), Ann (1838-), Rebecca (1839-), Jane (1841-1842), William (1843-1897), Thomas (1845-1911), Alfred Underwood (1848-1906) and David (1850-1933).  Thomas worked as a turnkey at the Cambridge goal and the family lived at Smarts Row (1841) then Bradmore Street (1851). He died at Bradmore Street and his funeral was held on 27 December. The Cambridge Chronicle and Journal reported the funeral: ‘the coffin was borne by eight policemen in their uniforms, who voluntarily performed the office of bearers in testification of the respect in which they held the deceased; and was followed  by Mr. Edis, the governor of the goal, and immediate relatives and friends of Mr Gates. A touching scene occured in the cemetery, just as the corpse was being lowered into the grave, the little children of Mr Gates called upon their father as though he still had life and power to come among them; the incident drew tears into the eyes of many present’.

Martha Gates (née Underwood) (1804 – October 1883)

Martha was born in Cavendish, Suffolk and married Thomas Gates when she was c.30 years old. In 1871 she was working as a laundress and living at 22 Broad Street with sons William, Alfred and David. She later lived at Broad Street with son William and his family (1881).  Martha died at Sturton Street aged 79 years old and was buried at Mill Road Cemetery on 1 November 1883.

William Gates (1843 – 7 January 1897)

William worked as a tailor and married Edith Roe at St. Paul’s Church on 30 March 1873. They had ten children: Edith Harriett (1873-1908), William Charles (1875-1952), Elizabeth (1881-), Flora (1883-1964), Rebecca Elizabeth (1885-1962), Private George (1886-1917), Henry (1889-1979), Arthur Sidney (1894-1978) and two children who died as infants. They lived at 22 Broad Street (1881), Sturton Street and Beche Road (at least 1892 onwards).  William died at Beche Road aged 52 years old and his funeral was held on 11 January 1897.

Edith Catherine Gates (née Roe) (c.1850 – 20 March 1922)

Edith was born in London and married William Gates when she was 22 years old. After she was widowed she ran a general store at 61 Cavendish Road (1901 until at least 1910) before moving to Hitchin where she worked as a caretaker (1911). She died in Hitchin aged 71 years old.

Edith Hariett Gates (1873 – 13 October  1908)

Edith was the eldest daughter of William and Edith Gates. In 1891 she was working as a housemaid for farmer Edward Newman in Bottisham but by 1901 had returned to Cambridge to live with her mother at Cavendish Road. Edith died at Addenbrooke’s Hospital and was buried at Mill Road Cemeteyr on 17 October.
