Catherine Mary Conquest (née Kitchener) (1861 – 14 February 1926)

Catherine appears to have been known as Kate through her life.  She was the daughter of Joseph and Rebecca Kitchener and was baptised on 4 August 1861.  She grew up at 2 Fisher Lane, where her father was a groom.   She married college servant Walter John Conquest on January 8th  1882 at St Andrew the Great. Walter worked as a ‘gyp’ which was a kind of valet/man servant who would have worked across a number of students. It is not known which college he worked at.

Kate and Walter had three children: Walter Sidney (1882-1886), Daisy Emily (1885-1976) and Beatrice Annie (1889-1976).  They lived at 26 Norfolk Street (until at least 1888), before moving to 6 Tennis Court Terrace. Kate died at home aged 65 years old.

Walter Sidney Conquest (1882- September 1886)

Walter Sidney was the eldest child of Walter and Kate. He died in the about 6 weeks before his cousin Beatrice Annie. They may have caught one of the many childhood illnesses of this period.

Beatrice Ann Kitchener (1880- October 1886)

Beatrice was the younger sister of Kate. She was living at 6 Norfolk St when she died.

Walter John Conquest (27 October 1860 – 14 June 1948)

Walter was the son of James and Sarah Conquest. James was an ostler when Walter was young and the family lived on Eden Street, later he ran the Osbourn Arms on Hills Road. By the age of 21 Walter had become a gyp and was living at 76 Sturton Street with his family, he married the following year.

He married Minnie Page (1855-) in 1935, and in 1939 was living with her at Tennis Court Terrace.  He died in June 1948 aged 87 years old.
