Freda Fakes (c.November 1910 – 6 December 1911)

Freda was the youngest daughter of Arthur Fakes (1877-1961) and Florence Mary (née Leggett) (1879-1947). Arthur and Florence were from neighbouring villages in Suffolk and married in 1903. Arthur started his career as an apprentice plumber, and before her marriage, Florence worked as a parlour maid for the Ransome family in Ipswich. They met up again when Arthur was working at Melton, near Ipswich.

By January 1904 they had moved to Cambridge, where eldest daughter Hilda (1904-2002) was born.  The couple subsquently had three sons: Arthur Austin (1905-1979), Edward Ralph (1907-1983) and Victor Gordon (known as Gordon) (1909-1983) before Freda was born c.November 1910.

When the 1911 census was taken on 2 April 1911 the family were living at 75 St Phillips Road, and Freda was recorded as being 4 months old, consistent with her having been born in November 1910.

According to her sister Hilda’s family, Freda died at home aged 1 year old after a fatal fall down the stairs and died on 6 December as a result of ‘convulsions 1 day and dentition’. She was buried at Mill Road Cemetery on 9 December 1911.

Arthur and Florence had moved to 35 Romsey Road by 1914 and subsequently had another son: Alan James (1915-2014).   Arthur worked as a plumber for builder Charles Kerridge of Sturton Street, and eventually became Managing Director of the Company. Charles Kerridge was also Arthur’s maternal uncle.   By 1930 the family were living at Walsham, 294 Coldhams Lane – perhaps the house name was chosen to reflect Arthur’s birth place of Walsham Le Willows. Both Florence and Arthur died in Cambridge and are buried at Newmarket Road Cemetery.
