Horace Francis French (1914 – 9 April  1918)

Horace was the only son of Francis and Nellie (née Cole) French.  He died at 13 East Road after ‘a brief illness’ and was buried at Mill Road Cemetery on 12 April 1918. The funeral service was held at the family home before interment at the Cemetery. The Cambridge Independent Press reported ‘Mrs F.J. French wishes sincerely to thank all friends who have shown such loving sympathy in this time of sorrow’.

Francis French died in August 1931 and was also buried in the Holy Trinity area of Mill Road Cemetery. It is thought he might have been buried in the same grave.

Francis  Joseph French (1885-August 1931)

Francis was the second son of George Henry French and Mary Jane (née Cockerton). His father was a hay, corn and straw dealer and he grew up at 173 East Road.  Francis attended the Friends School in Saffron Walden and then  worked with his father and brother Tom –  the business was named G.H. French and Sons. In 1911 he was living with his grandmother Jane Cockerton at 13 East Road. Francis married Nellie Maud Cole (1891-1964) in 1912 and they had two children: Joyce Nellie (1913-2002) and Horace.  Francis died at 13 East Road aged 46 years old and was buried at Mill Road Cemetery on 28 August 1931.
