Monument

This headstone is hidden within bushes and has not been photographed. The CFHS survey plotted it 4 rows north west of the Gwydir St gate and about half way between the wall and the central path. We have not found it.

Martha Elizabeth (Bessie) Frost (10 November 1861 – 7 January  1949)

Bessie was baptised at Holy Sepulchre Church on 8 December 1861 and was the daughter of Edward James Mason and Martha Elizabeth (née Dewey). Her father was a grocer/baker who had a shop at 53 & 53 Park Street, where Bessie grew up. Aged 20 she was living at Vicarsbrook, Cambridge Road, Trumpington and was working as a housemaid for Rev. Louis and Harriet Borrisow. She then worked as a servant at a house on West Road (1891) before marrying Alfred Frost on 23 November 1898 at Christ Church. Alfred worked as a college servant and they lived at 5 Parsonage Street (1900-at least 1901) before moving to Clergy House, 61 Norfolk Street where he was recorded as a housekeeper in 1911. The couple had two children: Edwin (1900-1900) and Bessie Dorothy (1903-1986). She was widowed in 1916 and then ran a Lodging House at 1 Tennis Court Terrace (at least 1916-1945). She died in Cambridge aged 87 years old.

Bessie’s daughter Bessie Dorothy continued to live at 1 Tennis Court Terrace until her death in 1985.

George Alfred Frost  (17 April 1862 – February 1916)

George was the son of George and Louisa Frost, brother of Walter. His father was a baker and he grew up at 21 Magdalene Street (1871) and 33 Shelly Row (1881).  Aged 15 he was working as a grocer’s lad. In June 1885 he enlisted in the army and served with the Royal Marine Light Infantry. When he left the army, he returned to Cambridge and married Bessie Mason when he was 36 years old. George died aged 53 years old.

Edwin Mason Frost (October 1900 – 23 November 1900)

Edwin died at 5 Parsonage Street aged six weeks old and was buried at Mill Road Cemetery on 26 November.
