Relationships Parents and 3 children
Thomas John Funge (1849 – 23 February 1923)
Thomas was born in Cambridge the son of baker Thomas and Jane Funge. Thomas was working as a wine merchant’s clerk in 1871 and still living with his parents at 55 Eden St. He then seems to have gone to Ashton, Birmingham where he worked for the Inland Revenue. Returning to Cambridge to marry in 1875. Thomas worked as a clerk for customs and excise until his retirement.
He married Mary Ann Clifton in the parish of St Andrew the Less on April 15th 1875 and may have moved to Smallburgh or Dilham , Norfolk as that is where their first 2 children were born. They had returned Cambridge and were living at 4 Brunswick Walk by the time the children were baptised in July 1879. They then moved to 184 Gwydir St (1883 to at least1895)
And finally moved to 22 Lyndewode Road by1901. Thomas was treasurer of the Good Samaritan Society and parish warden for St Barnabas Church and his daughters helped with the flower arrangements at Christmas & Easter.
Both Thomas and Mary died at 22 Lyndewode Road.
Mary Ann Funge née Clifton (1852 – 8 June 1924)
Mary was the daughter of Benjamin and Mary Ann Clifton. Benjamin was a tailor and the family lived at 28 Grafton Street (1861) and then at 13 John Street (at least 1871 onwards)
Mary had seven children with Thomas, four of whom died as infants: Rosa Jane (1876), Thomas Weston (1877-1880), Florence Mary (1879-1880), Edward (1881), twins William and Henry (1883-1883) and Alice (1886).
By the time time the twins were born they were living at 184 Gwydir St and moved to Lynwood Rd sometime after 1895.
Mary may also have been involved with the work of St Barnabas Church along with her ex neighbour Mrs Parr (first names for the women were generally not used in the newspapers at the turn of the century) but it is like ly that they are the Funge & Parr running the stalls at the church sale of work in 1905.
Florence Mary Funge (1879 – 1880) Thomas Weston Funge (1877 – 1880)
Thomas was born in Dilham Norfolk and his birth was registered in nearby Smallburgh. He was baptised in Cambridge along with his baby sister Florence in 1879. They died within 3 months of each other.
Henry and William Funge (1883 – 1883)
Henry and William were privately baptised and only 3 weeks old when they died.
