We have not found this headstone that lies on the southern border of the parish about 6/7 rows east of the west path. This area is very overgrown and the location given above is approximate using the original CFHS map. The headstone may have fallen.
Inscription
Elizabeth Greaves (1823 – 29 November 1861)
Elizabeth was the first wife of John Greaves. She was born in the parish of St Clements. They had one child together – Susan [b1845]. The 1851 census has them living at Bentinck Street, and John was working as a gardener. In 1861 they were living on King’s Lane and John was working as a gardener at King’s College. Elizabeth died later that year aged 38 years old.
Elizabeth Greaves (1828 – 23 January 1872)
Elizabeth was the second wife of John Greaves. She was born in Cambridge and must have married him c 1862/63. They had at least three children together Elizabeth [1863-], John [1864-1945] and Harriett [1868-].
In 1871 she was living with John and their children at Rose Cottage, Chesterton Lane. John was a gardener and florist and Elizabeth was working as a launderess. She died in 1872 aged 43 years old.
John Greaves was born in Horsford, Norfolk in 1813. He was the son of James and Anne Greaves. He married for a third time to Eliza Sarah Howlett [1842- 1912] around 1873/4. They had three children together Ellen Jane [1874-1967], George [1875-1951] and Letitia Eliza [1877-1945]. They lived at High Street Whittlesford where John was a domestic gardener and general shopkeeper [1881]. John and Eliza then moved to The Limes in Great Shelford where he was a market gardener [1891]. John Greaves died in 1892 in Great Shelford, and his probate records record him as a gardener and seedsman. He married three times, and had seven children.
