Monument

Located roughly seven rows east of the Norfolk Street gate and midway between the north wall and the path next to the headstone and footstones of the Gentle family. There was no evidence of the cross recorded by CFHS and only a fragment of stone survives with the name just visible. It is possible that this was a footstone.

Inscription

In Memory of CHARLES GURFORD d Dec 1 1866 aged 59

Charles Gurford (10 April 1808 – 1 December 1866)

Charles was born in Bishop’s Stortford and baptised there on 31 May 1809. He was the son of William and Susan (née Tuck) Gurford and trained as a cook. Charles married widow Susannah Maskall (née Johnson) (1782-1858) at St. Mary the Less Church on 7 November 1830. Susannah had at least five children from her first marriage to Thomas Maskall, and she and Charles had one daughter together: Sarah (1833-). They lived at Little St. Mary’s Lane, where Susannah died in August 1858 age 76 years old. In 1861 he was living at 38 James Street with his sisters Susan and Clemencie and was working as a college cook.

Charles died at home and his funeral was held on 6 December. Using  the birth date on his baptism record he was 58 years old, but the grave monument shows 59 years.
