John Thomas Hallows (1859 – 10 February 1916)
John was born in Shalford, four miles north of Braintree in Essex. He was the son of Thomas and Mary Ann, and his father was a railway fireman. By 1871 the family had moved to Cambridge and lodged at 4 Downing Terrace with grandmother Hannah Plumber. In 1871, Thomas Hallow was documented as an unemployed railway engine driver. In 1881 John was still living with his grandmother, parents an dsiblings at Downing Court and he was working as a butcher. He married Elizabeth Clark on 22 March 1885 at St. Andrew the Great Church and they had three children: Sidney Charles (1890-1896), Ernest John (1893-1967) and Ellen Bertha (known as Nellie) (1896-1980). The family lived at Thoday Street and he worked as a butchery manager for the Co-operative. He died suddenly aged 56 and an inquest was held into his death. He had left for work at 7.15am after a ‘hot breakfast’ and en route had called into the Durham Ox pub on Mill Road and asked the landlady for a drop of whisky. ‘He did not say why he wanted it. He made some remark about the weather and witness turned round to go on with her household duties. Shortly afterwards she heard a fall, and on turning round saw Mr. Hallows lying on the ground. He had put the water into the whisky, but he had not drunk any of it. She called her husband, who felt his pulse and found he was dead’. P.C. Witham said he had known John for many ears and ‘he was very active for his age, and would often walk very quickly to his business’. The inquest returned a verdict of death from natural causes, as Dr. Lawton said that he had died of ‘valvular disease of the heart’. His funeral was held on 15 February at St. Philip’s Church, where he had been a member of the choir for eighteen years.
Elizabeth Hallows (née Clark) (1862 – 10 July 1932)
Elizabeth was born in Pulham Market, a village eight miles north east of Diss, and fourteen miles south of Norwich and was baptised there on 16 March 1862. She was the daughter of Charles(1833-1870) and Ellen (née Rivett) (1842-1875) Clark. Her father was a blacksmith, but both her parents had died by the time she was 13 years old, leaving her and her two younger siblings as orphans. She was living in Cambridge by the time she married John Hallows in 1885. Elizabeth continued to live at 60 Thoday Street after she was widowed and died aged 70 years old.
Sidney Charles Hallows (1890 – 4 July 1896)
Sidney died at Thoday Street aged 6 years old and was buried at Mill Road Cemetery on 8 July.
