Gwendoline (Gwen) Margaret Harradine (1895 – 24 October 1920)

Gwen was the daughter of Arthur Hornsby Harradine (1856-1936) and Margaret Elizabeth (née McQuire) (1855-). Her father was a cabinet maker, and she grew up at 13 East Road (1901) and 22 Sleaford Street (1911). In August 1907 she was a bridesmaid at the wedding of her brother Harold to Ethel Taylor. The wedding was held at St. Paul’s Church and Gwen wore ‘a dress of ivory silk trimmed with lace and a pale blue silk sash. Her hat was made of white lace and pale blue silk’.  Her bouquet was made of pale pink roses and sweet peas, and she wore a gold chain and pendant which Harold had given her on the day.

Aged 15 Gwen was working as a milliner’s apprentice and died in Putney aged 25 years old.  Her funeral was held on 30 October and the Cambridge Daily News reported ‘Miss Haradine had for some eight years been a great but patient sufferer, and her kind and affectionate disposition endeared her to all who knew her. She passed away whilst on a visit to her brothers at Putney’. Gwen worshipped at the Tabernacle Primitive Methodist Chapel on Newmarket Road and many members attended the funeral.

Harriet Elizabeth Harradine (1857 – 23 Aug 1938)

Very little is known of Harriet’s life. She is thought to have been a relative of Arthur Harradine, Gwen’s father.  She was documented as living with Arthur at 38 Abbey Road in 1936, Cambridge and died in Cambridge aged 81 years.

Harradine Family

It is probable that other members of the Harradine family are buried in the same grave and commemorated on the missing kerb stones.  Arthur Hornsby Harradine (1856-1936) was born in Bourn, Cambridgeshire to William and Susannah Webb. He married Margaret McQuire (1855-) in 1879 and they had six children: Harold McQuire (1883-), Percy Montague (1885-1921), Herbert Mansfield (1887-1969), Gwen and two  children who died as infants. Arthur was a cabinet maker and they lived at 4 St. Matthew’s Buildings (1881), East Road (1891/1901), Sleaford Street (1911) and 38 Abbey Road (at least 1919 onwards).  Arthur Harradine died in Cambridge aged 81 years old, and it is thought his wife died a few years before.

(Margaret Harradine’s mother’s maiden name was Mansfield, which is probably where the engraving comes from)
