The headstone In October 2025.

This headstone in the parish of Andrew the Less stands 1 row east of the central path just as it curves towards the north gate. The top of this has broken and the carved inscription is not easy to read.

Robert Hawes (1791 – 20 March 1866)

Robert was born in Norfolk, the son of John and Elizabeth (née Chesney). He married Sarah Hobson in Impington on 9 November 1819 and they had at least six children: Ann (1820-1836), Harriet (1822-1894), William (1825-1826), Mary (1825-1828), Eliza (1826-1828) and William Henry (1828-1830). Robert worked as a bricklayer and from at least 1828 onwards the couple lived at 60 Burleigh Street. He died at home and his funeral was held on 26 March 1866.

Sarah Hawes (née Hobson)  (1787 – 17 September 1868)

Sarah was born in Histon and baptised there on 8 September 1787.  She was the daughter of Thomas and Ann Hobson, and married Robert Hawes when she was 32 years old. Sarah also  died at Burleigh Street and was buried at Mill Road Cemetery on 17 September.

Robert and Sarah’s five children were  buried in the graveyard of St. Andrew the Less, Barnwell.  Their other daughter Harriet married  bricklayer John Rowling (1813-1887) in 1841, and lived at 8 Grafton Street.  Both Harriet and John are also buried at Mill Road Cemetery but their grave has not yet been identified.

William Hawes (1825 – March 1826)

William died at New Street, and is believed to have been 11 months old. He was buried on 26 March.

Eliza Hawes (1826-January 1828)

Eliza died at Burleigh Street aged 16 months old and was buried on 30 January.

Mary Hawes (c.January 1825 – April 1828)

Mary died at Burleigh Street aged 3 years and 3 months old and was buried on 13 April.

George Henry Hawes (1828- December 1830)

George died at Burleigh Street aged 2 years old and was buried on 16 December 1830

Ann Hawes (1820  -April 1836)

Ann died aged 15 years old and was buried on 10 April.
