Edwin was the son of David and Sarah Jennings. His father was a cheese monger  and he grew up on Pembroke Street. After his father died in 1864 took over the business at 7 Peas Hill with his mother and brother.  This later became known as ‘Jenning Brothers’ and became a cheesemonger and italian warehouse store which he ran with his brother Charles.

He married Emily Southgate at Forest Gate in Essex on 1 September 1875.  The couple are not believed to have had any children and in 1881 he was employing 2 men and 2 boys in the business.  He was a member of the 1st Cambridgeshire Rifle Volunteers, a member of one company and in 1871 was promoted from Lane-corporal to Corporal.

Edwin died suddenly aged 45 years. He had complained of feeling ill the previous day, but had continued to work. At midnight he fell seriously ill and the doctor was called.  He died at noon on the 3 May.

His obituary noted that he had been a prominent freemason within the town – being a member of the Fidelity Chapter, York Mark Lodge and the Rose Croix Chapter.  His funeral service was held at St. Benet’s Church.

Emily Jennings (née Southgate)  (c.1852‒ 1 February 1932)

Emily was the daughter of Daniel and Lydia Southgate.  She was born and raised in Mepal, where her father ran a grocery and drapers shop.  She married Edwin Jennings when she was 23 years old.  In 1901 she was living at 255 Mill Road with servant Alice Harvey.  In 1920 her brother in law Alfred Jennings was also recorded as living at 255 Mill Road.  Emily died at the house in 1932 aged 80 years old.
