Relationship: Husband, wife, son, daughter-in-law, and two grandchildren

Richard Laughton (1797 – 7 February 1871)

Richard was born in Cambridge, the son of Richard (1758-1814) and Ann (née Sykes), brother of Elizabeth.   He married Sarah Hutchcraft and they had at least nine children: James (1822-1892),  Edward (1824-1876), Richard (1826-1894), Sarah Hutchcraft (1828-1910), William Hutchcraft (1830-1914), John (1835-1907), Frances (1836-1883), Mary Ann (1839-) and Thomas (1841-1923). He worked as a tailor and the family lived at 14 Albert Street (1851), then 41 Fitzroy Street (1861).  In January 1869 Richard won an election for a place at the Victoria Asylum and died aged 73 years.

Sarah Laughton (née Hutchcraft) (1797 – 25 July 1881)

Sarah is thought to have been the daughter of William and Sarah Hutchcraft. After Richard’s death the board of the Victoria Asylum voted ‘have continued to her the benefits of the Asylum in accordance with rule 23’ and a Mr. Webb ‘spoke of Mrs. Laughton as a worthy recipient and the resolution was carried unanimously’.  Sarah died at James Street (possibly at the home of her daughter Sarah) aged 84 years old and her funeral was held on 30 July.

Edward Laughton (1824 – 5 July 1876)

Edward was the eldest son of Richard and Sarah and was baptised on 11 April 1824 at St. Andrew the Great Church. He worked as a tailor and married Esther Soward in 1848. The couple had two children: Edwin and Clara, both of whom are buried in the same grave. They lived at 19 South Street, and after Esther’s death in 1857, he went to live with his parents and siblings at Fitzroy Street (at least 1861 onwards). Edward died at home and his funeral was held on 8 July.

Esther Laughton (née Soward) (1824 – 25 August 1857)

Esther was the daughter of James and Ann Soward, and was baptised on 4 July 1824 at St. Mary the Less Church. Aged 16 Esther was living at Trumpington Street and working as a servant for butler George Roberson and his wife Sarah. She died ‘very suddenly’ aged 33 years old at Eden Street.

Edwin Soward Laughton (1849 – 1 May 1854)

Edwin died at South Street and was buried at Mill Road Cemetery on 3 May.

Clara Ellen Laughton (1850 – 6 March 1886)

Clara appears to have been raised by her maternal uncle and aunt – John and Agnes Soward at Bradmore Street (1861) and 12 East Road (1871). She died at East Road aged 35 years old.
