Emily Pilgrim Newman (née Fitch) (1870 – 25 May 1935)
Emily was the daughter of Joseph and Rebecca Fitch, and was baptised at St. Paul’s Church on 25 July 1875. Her father was a coal porter, and aged 20 Emily was working as a domestic servant to William and Hannah Kett, and living at Beechdean on Hills Road. She married David Soame Long (1867-1901) on 26 March 1892 at St. Matthew’s Church, Cambridge. David was the son of James and Maria (née Beaumont) and in 1891 had been working as a groom in Cambridge. They had one son – Leslie John and lived at 7 Bradmore Street.
In 1899 David was working as a coachman for Dr. Roper. Newspapers reported that he had been involved in an accident in May 1899, at the station when his horse had slipped and thrown David, causing him to be unconscious. He was taken to hospital, but was reported to be recovering. He died at Bradmore Street on 24 August 1901 aged 34 years old. He is buried in this parish area on 27 August but we are not sure of the location of the grave as there is no grave register for Andrew the Less.
Emily married saddler Arthur Newman (1874-1951) in 1903 and they lived at 178 East Road. The couple had a further five children: Arthur (1904-), Dorothy Maud (1906-2002), Leonard Bertram (1908-1968), Sidney James (1909-) and Edith Vera (1913-2006). She died aged 65 years old.
Arthur may be buried in the cemetery on Newmarket Road.
Leslie John Long (1897 – 20 September 1935)
Leslie was the only son of David and Emily Long and was baptised at St. Matthew’s Church on 7 March 1897. He grew up with his step-father and siblings at 178 East Road, and in 1911 was working as a tailor’s apprentice. It is believed that he fought in the 1st World War as a Private in the Royal Army Service Corps. Leslie married Violet Gammon (1907-) in 1927 and they had two children: Beryl L (1929-) and Dawn O (1934-). The couple moved to live in Claton-on-Sea in c.1930 and he died at 17 Dudley Road, Clacton-on-Sea,four months after his mother’s death.
