Jane Sewell (née Lack) (c.1816 – 7 October 1902)
Jane was the daughter of Daniel and Dinah Lack. She was born in Willingham and baptised there on 19th May 1816. She married Thomas Tuffill in Willingham on 8th April 1838.
Thomas and Jane had at least six children together: Thomas Jabez (1845-1861), Priscilla Jane (1847-1868), Julia Hannah, Ebenezer Samuel, Amelia Elizabeth (1855-1935) and Arthur William (1857-1857).
In 1851 the family were living at 21 Sussex Street, and Thomas Tuffill was a master tailor. He had operated from Sussex Street since 1838. From c1850 onwards he was also running the Lodging House and Temperance Hotel. He appears to have fallen on hard times as he was declared bankrupt, and all his shop fittings and materials were sold in October 1856 due to non-payment of rent. The bankruptcy hearing was in December 1856 – he had debts of £210, and assets of only £106. Thomas Tuffill died aged 47 years old on 25th October 1858 at Hobson Street.
Jane was left a widow – the 1861 census shows her still living at 12 Hobson Street, and receiving parochial relief. She married for a second time later that year to Joseph Lawrance Sewell, a print compositor. In 1871 Jane and Joseph were living at 39 James Street, with her children Amelia and Ebenezer. Joseph Sewell died in late 1872 and Jane was left a widow for a second time.
She continued to live at 39 James Street (1881) before moving to Alpha House, 115 Newmarket Road (1891). She died in 1902.
Ebenezer Samuel Tuffill (c.1851 – 14 December 1904)
Ebenezer was the second son of Thomas Lack and Jane. He grew up with his step father Joseph Sewell, and later lived with his mother at Alpha House, 115 Newmarket Road. He was an ironmongers apprentice (1871) and later an ironmongers assistant. He did not marry, and lived with his mother and sister Amelia. Amelia’s occupation was an ironmongers cashier, which suggests that they worked together. He died at the Fulbourn Hospital in December 1904, aged 53 years old.
Julia Hannah Martin (formerly Hurry née Tuffill) (c.1849 – 25 November 1920)
Julia was the second daughter of Thomas Lack and Jane. She grew up at Sussex Street, and later at 12 Hobson Street. She married William John Hurry at Hobson Street Chapel on 29th May 1884. William died in November 1889.
Julia then married for a second time to widower Robert Martin on 21st July 1894. Robert Martin was a seed and grain merchant from Watton, Norfolk. Julia and Robert lived in Watton, until his death on 25th June 1909. Julia then moved back to Cambridge, and in 1911 was living at Alpha House, 115 Newmarket Road with her sister Amelia. She died in 1920.
Amelia Elizabeth Tuffill continued to live at Alpha House by herself after her siblings and mother had died. She died at home on 30th August 1935 aged 80 years old.
