Frederick Matthews (1874-1952)
Frederick was born in 1874 in Cambridge, Cambridgeshire. He was one of at least eleven children born to John Matthews (c.1827-1885) and Susan Matthews (c.1837-1917) (née Oakman). In 1881 the family was living in Madingley House, Cambridge. Frederick’s father died when he was 9 years old. By 1891 Frederick was still living at home at Victoria Road, Cambridge but he had started working as a barber. Frederick married Susan Helena Farrant Edwards (1870-1950) in 1896 in Cambridge. They had four daughters: Louisa Helena (1898-1990), Nellie (1899-1943), Julia Alexander (1901-1998) and Rosina Elizabeth (1907-1972). By 1901 the family was living at 129 Fitzroy Street, Cambridge. Frederick died on 1 February 1952 in Cambridge.
Frederick’s older brother, Thomas Matthews (1864-1924), and his family were also buried in this cemetery.
Susan Helena Farrant Matthews (née Edwards) (1870-1950)
Susan was born in 1870 in Cambridge, Cambridgeshire. She was the eighth of twelve children born to Richard Edwards (1837-1905) and Louisa Farrant Edwards (née Haws) (1839-1915). In 1871 the family lived at the Rabbit Inn, 50 Gold Street, Cambridge. In 1881 Susan was still living at home at 8 Fitzroy Street, Cambridge. In 1891 Susan was still living at home at the Fitzroy Arms public house at 11 Fitzroy Street. Her father was working as a brewer and wine merchant. Susan married Frederick Matthews (1874-1952) in 1896 in Cambridge. Susan died on 5 February 1950 in Cambridge.
Six of Susan’s siblings died in infancy, and were also buried in this cemetery. Four of Susan’s five siblings, who survived infancy, were also buried in this cemetery: Elizabeth Farrant Driver (née Edwards)(1857-1926), Mary Ann Farrant Nixon (née Edwards) (1860-1921), William John Farrant Edwards (1860-1915) and Richard James Farrant Edwards (1866-1913).
Nellie Matthews (1899-1943)
Nellie was born in 1899 in Cambridge, Cambridgeshire. She was the second of four daughters born to Frederick Matthews (1874-1952) and Susan Helen Farrant Matthews (née Edwards) (1870-1950). She died on 28 November 1943 in Cambridge.
