William George Meeks (1879 – 1 June 1937)

William was the eldest son of Moses and Sarah Meeks. He worked as a pork butcher, and had moved to Nelson, Lancaster by the age of 22 (1901), where he worked for his uncle – Richard Meeks.  Richard ran ‘a well-known pork butchering business’ in Nelson, and William lived in the town for most of his life. He had been in ill health for some years when he collapsed and died whilst at the Majestic Cinema.  He was seen falling forward ‘during an exciting scene’, and was carried to the cinema foyer, but died before the doctor arrived.  Newspapers reported his death under the headline of ‘Tragedy at Pictures’ and noted he was ‘well known in the town being a member of the Conservative Club and a member of the Marsden Lodge of Freemasons’.

Sarah Meeks (née Kidman) (1850 – 23 May 1927)

Sarah was born in Fen Ditton, the daughter of labourer George Kidman and Alice. She married Moses Meeks in 1873 and they had eight children: Alice Mary Ann (1874-1949), William George, Eliza (1881-1884), Samuel Arthur (1883-1959), Florence Eliza (1885-1885), Ethel May (1885-1976), Ellen Elizabeth (Nellie) (1888-) and Mabel Gladys (1893-1971). Moses worked as a college cook, later as a hotel cook, and the family lived at 135 Sturton Street (at least 1881 onwards).

Moses Meeks (1849 – 26 December 1937)

Moses was born in the village of Doddington, midway between Chatteris and March in Cambridgeshire. He was the son of William and Mary Ann, and his father was a journeyman wheelwright. He died at Sturton Street on Boxing Day 1937 aged 88 years old.

Florence Eliza (Florrie) Meeks (1885- June 1885)

Florrie died at Sturton Street and was buried at Mill Road Cemetery on 12 June 1885.

Eliza Meeks (1881-August 1884)

Eliza died at Sturton Street aged 3 years old and was buried at Mill Road Cemetery on 20 August 1884.
