SARAH METCALFE relict of HENRY METCALFE
Hawstead House Suffolk ESQ died at Cambridge January 8 1850 aged 50 years
Sarah Metcalfe (née Gibbs) (1799 – 8 January 1850)
Sarah is believed to have been born in Chipping Norton, Oxfordshire and was the daughter of Joseph and Fanny. She was baptised on 20 June 1799. She married widower Henry Metcalfe (1790-1849) at St. Luke’s Church, Finsbury Park on 23 April 1846.
Henry was the son of Chrisopher Barton Metcalfe, and inherited the Hawstead estate from his great-uncle Philip Metcalfe in 1818. He had married Frances Jane Whish (1793-1830) in 1820 and the couple had had at least four children: Frances Sophia (1821-1823), Henry Christopher (1822-1881), Philip Roger Colville (1827-1899) and Walter Charles (1828-1905). Frances died in May 1830 aged 36 years old and is buried at Hawstead Church.
Henry then married Sarah in 1846, but he died in September 1849 aged 58 years old. He was buried in the Metcalfe family vault in Hawstead Church on 8 September 1849. Sarah then appears to have moved to Cambridge but died just a few months later. Notices in newspapers reported Sarah was ‘relic of the late Henry Metcalfe, Esq of Hill-Street, Berkeley Square London and of Hawsted (sic) House near Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk’.
Information from Hawstead Parish Council website – the report of Hatchment 2 relates to Frances Metcalfe, and Hatchment 4 to Henry Metcalfe. They make very interesting reading!
