He worked as a railway fireman and married Elizabeth Pratt in Godmanchester on 17 October 1865. The couple had two children: George William (1866-1942) and May Caroline Elizabeth (1871-1929). They lived in Godmanchester for the early years of their marriage, but by 1881 had moved to live at 171 Gwydir Street and by that time William was a railway engine driver. He died at home and his funeral was held on 1 March.

Elizabeth was the daughter of George and Mary Pratt and was born in Great Staughton, near Huntingdon. Her father was an agricultural labourer and aged 17 Elizabeth was living in Huntingdon, working as a general servant to the Hunter family. She married William Newell when she was c.21 years old. After she was widowed she continued to live at 171 Gwydir Street, until at least 1911 and died at the County Hospital, Huntingdon.

Mary was born in Catworth, Huntingdon and baptised at Leighton Bromswold, Huntingdon on 16 March 1817. She was the daughter of George and Ann Archer and married agricultural labourer George Pratt (1815-1890). The couple lived in Great Staughton and had at least seven children: Joseph (1836-), John Archer (1841-1895), Elizabeth, James (1848-), Sarah (1852-1930), Mary (1856-) and Jane (1859-1927).
