PAULL CLAUDE NICHOLES third son of the above b Dec 26th 1886 d Aug 20th 1976 aged 89

Ena Jane Nicholes (née Paull) (1854 – 17 January 1937)

Ena was born Emma Jane Paull, and every document through her life including her probate and marriage records her name as Emma.  She seems to have been known as  Ena and that is what was engraved on the grave monument.

She was born in Redruth and married William Nicholes at St. George’s Church, Hanover Square in 1880.  The couple had eight children: William Arthur (1885-1955), Donald Davis (1883-1960), Emma Mabel (1885-1968), Paull Claude (1886-1976), Leonard Glenn (1888-1973), Victor Henry (1891-1948), Douglas Osborne (1892-1979) and one further child who died young.  William was a draper/hosier and ran a store from Commerce House, 30 Mill Road, Ena assisted in the business.  She died at 30 Mill Road aged 82 years old.

William Davis Nicholes (3 October 1858 – 27 July 1938)

William was born in Heston and was the son of Charles and Eliza (née Davis) Nicholes. He was baptised there on 31 October 1858. Charles was a farmer, and died in March 1861 when William was 2 years old.  He married Ena Paull when he was 21 years old.

William advertised his shop extensively in the local newspapers. An advert from October 1901 started ‘W.D. Nicholes, Commerce House, Mill Road, Cambridge I am now showing a grand assortment of new goods for the present season.  Through having a large wholesale connection I am able to buy from the manufacturers direct, therefore saving customers all intermediate profits.  For those about to be married it would be well repay them to visit me, my stock being very extensive, well assorted and grand value’.

A typical advert from June 1902 announced ‘W.D. Nicholes, Mill Road is showing new spring goods in all departments’  – it then lists the items including 2,000 yards coloured muslins, 200 yards Nainsook Foulard, 500 yards coloured dress material,  500 yards Black Alpaca (‘very bright – these are splendid value, 7 3/4d to 1s. 11 1/2d’), 100 Made up Dress skirts, 50 pairs white hemmed sheets, 100 white damask tablecloths, 300 pairs lace curtains (‘all the latest patterns, these are exceptional value’), 80 full size White Honeycomb and Marcella quilts (‘desperately cheap’), 500 dozen hosier, 70 boxes lace gloves’.

He died at 30 Mill Road aged 79 years old.  It is not known why the grave monument records his age as 81 years old.  William’s son Victor took over the business at Mill Road.

Paull Claude Nicholes (26 December 1886 – 20 August 1976)

Paull worked as a watchmaker and did not marry.  His name was inverted to Claude Paull in documents through his life. He had a shop at 102a Mill Road and lived with his parents at 30 Mill Road until their deaths.  In 1939 he was lodging at 13 Collier Road with Frederick and Matilda Alpe. He later lived at 10 Glisson Road (1945) and then at 2 Guest Road (1950/1960).  He died at St. George’s Nursing Home, Kneesworth, Royston.
