William Pottrell (1825 – 10 January 1903)
William was born in the village of Chrishall, twelve miles south of Cambridge. He was the son of John and Ann (née Palmer) and by 1851 was living in Heydon and working as a journeyman blacksmith. He married Mary Ann Cowell (1830-1921) in Heydon on 28 July 1853 and they had ten children: William John (1854-1940), Frederick James (1856-1916), Mary Ann (1858-1929), Emma Tryphena (1861-1901), Edith (1863-1945), Anna Elizabeth (1865-1954), Alice (1867-1954), George (1869-1950), Elizabeth (1871-1955) and Jesse Richard (1874-1933). The family lived in Coton for many years, where William worked as a blacksmith (at least 1861-1891) and served as a parish constable. By 1901 they had moved to live at 33 Hemingford Road, and William worked at home as a blacksmith. He died at Hemingford Road aged 77 years old and his funeral was held on 15 January.
Mary Ann Pottrell (née Cowell) (1829 – January 1921)
Mary was born in Heydon, Essex the daughter of James (1801-1844) and Tryphena (née Rannow) (1803-1893). She was baptised at Holy Trinity Church, Heydon on Christmas Day 1829. Her father was an agricultural labourer and aged 21, Mary was living with her pauper mother and siblings in Heydon, working as a servant. After William’s death she lived at Hemingford Road with son Jesse and daughter Annie. Jesse also worked as a blacksmith, and in 1911 was employed by the railway. Mary died in January 1921 aged 91 years old.
