MARY ANN SHEPPARD the beloved wife of the above
Who died August 26th 1915, aged 72 years
Thomas Carter Sheppard (1843 – 21 January 1901)
Thomas was born in Ipswich and was the son of Thomas and Mary Ann Sheppard. Aged 7 [1851] he was living in Reading, as his father was an engineers clerk – they had a governess, a housemaid and a monthly nurse to look after the family and three small children.
By the age of 17 he was living in Swaffham, in Norfolk and lodging with a family whilst working as a railway clerk. He married Mary Ann Taylor on 30th August 1869 at St Margaret’s Church in Kings Lynn, Norfolk. Thomas and Mary had two daughters – Edith Gertrude [1870-1948] and Florence M [1872-].
By 1871 they had moved to Cambridge and were living at 8 Mill Street. Thomas was working as a railway fireman. In 1881 they had moved to Covent Garden and Thomas was now a railway engine driver. He died at his home at 12 Covent Garden on 21st January 1901 aged 57 years old. He left an estate valued at £1,326 12d and 4s.
Mary Ann Sheppard [nee Taylor] (c.1843 – 26 August 1915)
Mary Ann was the daughter of John and Ann Taylor. She was born in Kings’s Lynn and baptised there on 5th February 1843. Her father worked as a railway guard, which is perhaps how she met Thomas Sheppard. She was working as a dressmaker when she married him aged 26 years old. She was widowed in January 1901, and in the April census of that year was staying with her daughter Edith and son-in-law William Baldry at 30 Tenison Road.
She returned to live at 12 Covent Garden, and was living there alone in 1911. She died aged 72 years old.
