Inscription

In Loving Memory of MARY ANN STANLEY
Who died  December 29th  1899 in her 81st year.

“Into Thy hand I commit my spirit
Thou hast redeemed me oh God of truth.”

Mary Ann Stanley (née Careless) (1819 – 29 December  1899)

Mary was born in Burwell and married John Stanley (1812-1868) at Great St. Mary’s Church in 1837.  John was a scale maker and the family lived at 2 Wheeler Street (1851/1861), by 1861 Mary was working as a poulterer (a dealer in game/poultry).  They had at least five children: Mary Ann (1842-1864), Caroline (1846-1876), Harriett (1851-1879), Emma (1854-1923) and John (1857-1920).

They moved to trade at 1 Benet Street (also known as 8 Peas Hill where the frontage to the shop was) where John died in November 1868. Mary carried on trading in game from 1 Benet Street until at least 1881, and the business was later run by her son John.  It is thought she moved to live at 31 Regent Street (c.1884) and then at 7 New Square, where she died in December 1899.
