Joseph Whittaker (1 June 1817 – 6 April 1877)

Joseph was the son of Joseph and Sophia (nee Thorne) and was baptised at Vauxhall Chapel, Kennington Lane, Lambeth on 8 March 1818. He married Caroline Russell in 1841 in Camberwell, London and they had at least four children: Joseph (1843-1900), Emma Matilda (1849-1909), Charles Alfred (1852-) and Richard (1855-1907). They appear to have moved to live in Cambridge soon after marrying as all their children were born in Cambridge. Joseph worked as a printer/compositor and the family lived at 8 South Street. Joseph died at home and his funeral was held on 10 April.

Caroline Whittaker (nee Russell) (11 September 1821 – 14 January 1908)

Caroline was born in Walworth, Surrey and baptised on 30 September 1821 at St. John’s Church, Bermondsey. She was the daughter of Charles and Elizabeth Russell and married Joseph when she was 19 years old. After she was widowed she worked as a nurse and in 1881 was living with daughter Emma and her family at 39 Burleigh Street. George Marfleet, Emma’s husband was a baker, and from at least 1891-1901 the Marfleet family and Caroline were living at 12 Castle Street. She died at 13 Maids Causeway and was buried with her husband in 18 January.
