Richard Edward Marfleet (8 August 1884 – 10 October 1884)
Richard was the infant son of George and Emma and died at Burleigh Street aged 2 months old. He was buried at Mill Road Cemetery on 13 October.
Emma Matilda Marfleet (née Whittaker) (10 November 1851* – 7 February 1909)
Emma was the daughter of printer/compositor Joseph Whittaker and his wife Caroline. There is some discrepancy about her birth, as she was baptised on December 2nd 1949 in the parish of Andrew the Less, and recorded as a 1 year old, living at South Street with her parents, when the census was taken on 30 March 1851. She married George Marfleet at Christ Church on 6 October 1874 and they had at least four sons: Charles Joseph (1875-1957), Herbert Whittaker (1878-1935), Richard Edward and Edward Francis (1891-1950). George was a baker and corn dealer and the family lived at 39 Burleigh Street (1881), 12 Castle Street (1891- at least 1901) and 13 Maid’s Causeway. She died at home and her funeral was held on 10 February.
George Joseph Marfleet (24 March 1848 – 6 January 1915)
George was the son of George and Louisa, brother of Eliza and grew up at 217-218 Newmarket Road where his father ran a bakery/grocer’s shop. George trained as a baker and in 1871 was working for his father at Newmarket Road, before marrying Emma in 1874. After her death he married widow Ann Whittaker née Chuter (1855-) in 1910. Ann was the widow of Emma’s brother Richard.
In June 1897 he was elected to represent Castle Ward on the Cambridge Board of Guardians, and later represented Abbey Ward . He died at 30 Maid’s Causeway and newspapers reported his death saying ‘Mr. Marfleet who was a member of an old Cambridge family, formerly carried on business as a baker in Castle Street and only in recent years retired. Although he took no prominent part in public affairs he was well known in the town and was an old member of the Conservative club. As a member of the Town Council, Mr. Marfleet was quiet and unassuming and seldom spoke..his death will be regretted by a wide circle of friends’.
