George Wilson (30 June 1808 – 17 December 1882)
George was born in Gazely, near Newmarket and was the son of William (1772-1835) and Mary (née Pettit) (1777-1853). He worked as cook of Sidney Sussex College (at least 1832 onwards) and married Elizabeth Bland on 9 July 1832 at St. Mary the Less Chuch, Cambridge. From at least 1841 the couple lived at 35 New Square. In 1861 he was documented as being a college cook, merchant and farmer and was employing 4 labourers and boys. He had retired by 1871 and died at home aged 74 years old.
Elizabeth Wilson (15 April 1815 – 26 October 1900)
Elizabeth grew up at the Green Man, Trumptington and was the daughter of Elias (1781-1845) and Elizabeth (1788-1850). The pub had been run by her grandparents, and was subsquently run by her brother Thomas Bland. After George’s death she moved to live at 28 Trumpington Street, with two domestic servants (including Charlotte Wilson, who was in service to the Wilsons for over forty years) and died at home aged 85 years old. The contents of the house were sold at auction in December 1900 and included ‘useful household furniture….together with the silver plated goods, old china, books and a few engravings’.
