Gathercole headstone in November 2017.

Monument

This headstone stands 2 rows east of the east path roughly half way between the (southern) north wall and the east west path that leads to the centre circle. It is in an area that is usually left to grow wild and may be hidden by bramble. The carved inscription has eroded and is quite hard to read.

James Gathercole (18 March 1813 – 10 August 1891)

James was born in Stoke Ferry, Norfolk and married Susan Brown on 1 March 1837 in Northwold, Norfolk. The couple had at least two children: Ellen (1838-1902) and James (1845-) and lived in Northwold where James worked as an agricultural labourer. By 1851 he was documented as a maltster. The couple remained living in Northwold until at least 1871, but then moved to Vinery Road, Cambridge (at least 1891 onwards) – presumably to be closer to their daughter Ellen, who had married dairy farmer Charles Arnold in 1880. James died at Vinery Road aged 78 years old and was buried on 13 August.

Susan Gathercole (nee Brown) (1813- 27 December 1899)

Susan was born in Feltwell, Norfolk and after she was widowed went to live with her daughter Ellen at 8 Abbey Street. She died at Abbey Street aged 86 years old and was buried three days later.
